Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an approach that can be particularly helpful when individuals reach a point in their lives where, despite sustained effort, certain internal experiences or life circumstances feel resistant to change. When repeated attempts to “fix” oneself lead to frustration, self-criticism, or emotional exhaustion, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) offers a different and compassionate way forward. Rather than focusing on eliminating discomfort, this approach emphasizes learning how to live a meaningful and fulfilling life alongside thoughts, emotions, or situations that may not be fully changeable.

Marta Laurette, psychotherapist, integrates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into her work with adults in individual therapy, couples therapy, and group therapy. ACT centers on the development of psychological flexibility—the ability to remain present, open, and engaged with life, even in the presence of emotional pain or uncertainty. This approach helps clients shift their relationship with difficult internal experiences so those experiences no longer dictate their choices or limit their lives.

In ACT-informed therapy, Marta Laurette works collaboratively with clients to explore several core processes simultaneously. These include cultivating acceptance of what is, clarifying personal life values, and developing mindful awareness of thoughts and emotions in the present moment. Clients learn to observe their internal experiences without judgment or emotional attachment, creating space between themselves and unhelpful thought patterns. This mindful stance allows for greater choice and intentionality in how one responds to life’s challenges.

A central component of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is values-based living. Marta Laurette helps clients identify what truly matters to them—whether in relationships, personal growth, parenting, or work—and examine how avoidance, fear, or rigid thinking may be pulling them away from those values. Together, they focus on building willingness and commitment to take actions that align with what is meaningful, even when discomfort is present. Change is approached gradually and with compassion, emphasizing progress over perfection.

Within individual therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) supports personal insight and self-compassion. In couples therapy, it helps partners develop acceptance of differences, improve emotional presence, and choose behaviors that strengthen connection. In group therapy, ACT principles foster shared learning, normalization, and accountability as members practice new ways of relating to themselves and others.

The goal of ACT-based work with Marta Laurette is to help clients create lives that feel authentic, purposeful, and satisfying—not by removing pain, but by expanding the capacity to live fully despite it.
